Foreword
The research into the Snip family name began approximately 30 years ago (1990) by Wieger Snip and Andries de Leeuw (married to Trijntje Snip). After a short period, that research was concluded, but it was resumed between 2006 and 2013 by Andries, drawing on his newly acquired experience from researching his De Leeuw family tree. Following this, it was Paul (Popke) Snip, who had already gathered various pieces of information for the family tree, who continued the research and continues to do so.
Snip
A first impression was that possibly all Snips born, married, and deceased in the Province of Groningen could be traced back to one family. Upon closer inspection, that impression seems to be correct, with the exception of a small branch of Snips living in the city of Groningen, which leads to a certain Frans Fransen Snip.
The birthplace of the Snip family tree is located in Grootegast (Doezem/De Snipperij), from which a family of farmers and later sailors emerged.
The first sailor was Klaas Snip * 07-11-1848 in Tolbert (Gr), and all of his sons also became sailors.”
In this family tree, as of (21-10-2021), 1243 Snips have been included.
The 1000th discovered Snip was added to the database on February 10, 2009: Kim Snip, born October 6, 1993 in Assen.
Even if you do not currently find your ancestors in the Snip family index, you can be almost certain that if they were born in the Province of Groningen, you belong to this Snip family.
Smitter
In 2010 it was established that the children of Jan Wobbes, who died in 1811, a son of Wobbe Popkes and Aaltje Cornelis, took on the surname Smitter in 1812, just like their mother Geeske Jacobs. When Paul Snip took over the management of this family tree site in 2015, he decided to further research and add this family to the tree. At this moment (09-11-2020), there are 255 Smitters included in the Smitter index.
In the Netherlands, this Smitter family seems to have died out, but descendants continue to live on in the USA.
